Matthew Jennings and the crew of the Melody Tryst have somehow escaped from the Gael with their hides and hull intact, but find themselves in the debt of Vesper Santelli, not a man that one wants to owe anything to.

 

In exchange for sparing their lives, Santelli wants them to smuggle an item into Uulan space, the home territory of humanity's xenophobic sometimes ally. Naturally, things are a lot more complicated than Jennings has anticipated.

 

He's smuggling human cargo as part of a greater conspiracy that the Gael have orchestrated, a safeguard in case Operation Aurora failed. Now, the Melody Tryst has Uulan casteless mercenaries, drug runners, government agents, and Merquand royal bodyguards trying to chase them down as Jennings has to struggle with keeping his crew alive, keeping interstellar tensions from exploding into war, and keeping his girlfriend happy.
